This week we studied paper airplanes. All you need to make this paper airplane model called a dart is a regular piece of paper or any rectangular piece of paper. If you are doing a challenge afterward, you will want all the paper pieces for each child to be the same size.
When flown competitively, the usual aim is maximum flight duration. In the case of models flown outdoors, the modeler attempts to launch the model into rising column of air, a thermal. These outdoor free flight models tend to be designed for two very different flying modes: climbing rapidly under power or tow, and gliding slowly while circling with minimum fall rate. Much of the challenge in designing and flying these models is to maintain aerodynamic stability in both modes and to make a smooth transition between them. Detecting the thermal into which to launch is vital and can involve several methods, ranging from radio telemetered temperature and windspeed measurements plotted on a chart recorder to Mylar streamers or soap bubbles to visualize the rising air.

Acquired under the UK Oil & Gas Authority's 2016 seismic programme and published under the Open Government Licence in 2017, these surveys comprise 19,000km of newly acquired 2D broadband seismic (by WesternGeco and PGS), including gravity and magnetic data. Data from over 200 wells in the areas of interest are also available. All data published is freely available to download (where practical) from CDA's UKOilandGasData system. British Geological Survey (BGS) has a wide range of datasets and wants to increase access to these by publishing as many as possible under OpenGeoscience. OpenGeoscience is a free service where you can view maps, download data, scans, photos and other information.
